That Gut Feeling.

It’s amazing how your gut feeling overrides your intellect.

A study was done on a man who got into a car accident that left him in a coma for two weeks. Everything seemed to be intact once he awoke, but he held one delusion: he claimed his parents weren’t his real parents, they were imposters and were simply pretending to be his real parents. The science behind this is, the fusiform gyrus, the part of our body that identifies and familiarizes itself with faces, sees a person and then sends that message over to the amygdala. The amygdala then processes the image to determine what the appropriate emotion is to correspond with that image. Therefore, you should feel warmth when you see your parents, but this man felt nothing because the connection between the visual recognition was cut off from the emotional recognition due to the severe accident. Although his brain was telling him that those two people were his parents, his gut feeling told him it wasn’t because he felt nothing towards them so there was no way that it could be real.

And that just goes to show, your feelings are stronger than your intellect. Heart over mind. Now I understand why… when people fall in love, even if it isn’t the right thing to do, they can’t help but listen to their gut feeling over their mind.
